Celebrating Green Elk Rapids with “Trashformations”

Customers visiting our Elk Rapids store have really been enjoying the “trashformations” in front of our place in Downtown Elk Rapids. For the past few weeks the entire village has been celebrating “Green ER” or “Green Elk Rapids”.

This month long event encourages recycling and “going green”. 2013 Green ER started on April 21st and is running through May 29. The entire month is filled with fun activities and events and the “trashformations”. The trashformations are creations made from recycled and repurposed material with a “green” theme. Our building was nicked named the “Green Zoo” by two local girls. The reason is we have a number of “trashformation” animals outside including flamingos, giraffe’s, an elephant, a deer and even an alligator.

All of the animals were made from repurposed and recyclable material including bubble wrap, plastic bottles, heating hose, milk jugs, duct tape and more. Check out the entire collection of animals from Green Elk Rapids 2013 at this page on our website.

We even have a great video of all of the animals on the Green Elk Rapids page, too.

With the warm weather fast approaching many of us will be balancing work and summer activities. In addition the days will soon be getting longer too. This means more daylight, thus reducing the amount of time per day our body produces melatonin. Since melatonin is naturally produced in the body and exposure to light actually reduces the amount of melatonin in our system, the longer days may have some people getting less sleep. With this being the case, it makes sense to take a look a natural ways to enjoy a more restful night’s sleep during the summer months.

One natural choice is to add a glass of tart cherry juice to your daily routine. The reason for this suggestion is due to a study published from the University of Rochester, University of Pennsylvania and the VA Center of Canandaigua. According to the information in the study, the researchers worked with 15 older adults during the four week study period. During the first two-week stage of the research, the participants were asked to drink a glass (8 ounces of pure tart cherry juice) twice a day. They drank a glass once in the morning and the second glass in the evening. After the initial two weeks, the participants were then asked to drink a placebo drink, containing no cherry juice, for the remaining two weeks.

After the full four weeks were finished the data from the research was collected and analyzed. The results indicated an increase in a healthy night’s sleep when the participants drank the cherry juice. The researchers found the adults enjoyed about 17 more minutes of sleep, on average, during the two weeks of drinking the cherry juice.

So what are the Benefits in Cherry Juice?

As mentioned above, melatonin is naturally produced in the body and contributes to help regulate the rhythmic pattern of the body. It helps with wakefulness during the day and sleepiness during the night time hours. Tart cherries, is the top source of naturally occurring melatonin and to date no other fruit or vegetable has been discovered to provide more natural melatonin then tart cherries. This means by enjoying a glass of cherry juice twice daily may help to maintain healthy sleep patterns and help you get a better night’s sleep.

So take a peek at the melatonin levels in different tart cherry products. The following information is a result of research conducted by Dr. Russell Reiter. Dr. Reiter is considered the “Dean of Melatonin” by his peers. The reason for the nickname is one area of his career is the amount of research he has published on melatonin.

As indicated by the information in the chart above, a glass of cherry juice has about 135 nanograms of melatonin and the tart cherry powder even has more. We use tart cherry powder in our Fruit Advantage Tart Cherry Joint Formula – tart cherry capsules. So as you enjoy the long days of summer, consider adding a glass of cherry juice or tart cherry capsules to your daily routine to get an great night’s sleep, too.

We get a lot of soon-to-be customers contacting us and asking “What is the recommended dosage of cherry juice?” Being an all-natural product, their is no official daily recommended dosage. However, the suggested dose of the Fruit Advantage tart cherry juice concentrate is one ounce of juice concentrate to seven ounces of water. The reason for this 7-to-1 mixture is this is the correct mixture that the U.S. Government to qualify to make a 100% pure drink. Basically, this suggested mixture amount allows us to advertise that the reconstituted concentrate makes a 100% pure glass of juice.

However, you can always mix the ounce of the cherry concentrate with 4 ounces of water for a stronger cherry flavor or dilute it more. For example, mix in 10 ounces of water with the cherry concentrate.

No matter how you dilute the Fruit Advantage Cherry Juice Concentrate with water, the most important thing to remember is to get the full ounce of the concentrate daily. This amount is what most of the research has been conducted on regarding the natural health benefits of the tart cherry. In addition, if participants in a specific research study are drinking the cherry juice, reconstituted from the concentrate, they are usually consuming an 8 ounce glass to be studied for the research.

The intake of an 8 ounce glass, or multiple glasses, of the cherry juice allows the researchers to standardize the research findings and provide a solid understanding of the final results by both their peers in the research community and public in general.

For example, it would extremely confusing if cherry researchers used arbitrary amounts of the cherry juice. This would not only cause confusion but wouldn’t provide much insight to the dosage of cherry juice an individual should drink to receive the greatest benefits.

So to answer the original question, the dosage of cherry juice is to mix ounce of the cherry concentrate with 7 ounces of water to make a 100% pure glass of tart cherry juice.
