Lower Fat Food Alternatives #2

Word is getting out about our list of low fat alternatives for simple everyday foods. We just received an email from a long time customer from Washington and here is what Ms. G. from Seattle wrote:

“I have been buying your products from the farmers market here in Seattle and reading your blog for over two years. I have to say I really like what you are doing and this low fat alternatives is excellent. We are already using your suggestions.”

Here is a list of some additional low fat alternative foods you use in exchange of the high-fat foods. Not only will they provide an additional flavor depth, but lower fat, you simply can’t go wrong with great taste and low fat content.

Meat, fish and poultry

High Fat Foods – Coldcuts or lunch meats (bologna, salami, liverwurst, etc.)
Low Fat Alternative – Low-fat coldcuts (95 to 97% fat-free lunch meats, low-fat pressed meats)

High Fat Foods – Hot dogs (regular)
Low Fat Alternative – Lower fat hot dogs

High Fat Foods – Bacon or sausage
Low Fat Alternative – Canadian bacon or lean ham

High Fat Foods – Regular ground beef
Low Fat Alternative – Extra-lean ground beef such as ground round or ground turkey (read labels)

High Fat Foods – Chicken or turkey with skin, duck, or goose
Low Fat Alternative – Chicken or turkey without skin (white meat)

High Fat Foods – Oil-packed tuna
Low Fat Alternative – Water-packed tuna (rinse to reduce sodium content)

High Fat Foods – Beef (chuck, rib, brisket)
Low Fat Alternative – Beef (round, loin) (trimmed of external fat) (choose select grades)

High Fat Foods – Pork (spareribs, untrimmed loin)
Low Fat Alternative – Pork tenderloin or trimmed, lean smoked ham

High Fat Foods – Frozen breaded fish or fried fish (homemade or commercial)
Low Fat Alternative – Fish or shellfish, unbreaded (fresh, frozen, canned in water)

High Fat Foods – Whole eggs
Low Fat Alternative – Egg whites or egg substitutes

High Fat Foods – Frozen TV dinners containing more than 13 grams of fat per serving
Low Fat Alternative – Frozen TV dinners containing less than 13 grams of fat per serving and lower in sodium

High Fat Foods – Chorizo sausage
Low Fat Alternative – Turkey sausage, drained well (read label) Vegetarian sausage (made with tofu)

Baked Goods

High Fat Foods – Croissants, brioches, etc.
Low Fat Alternative – Hard french rolls or soft brown ’n serve rolls

High Fat Foods – Donuts, sweet rolls, muffins, scones, or pastries
Low Fat Alternative – English muffins, bagels, reduced-fat or fat-free muffins or scones (choose lowest calorie variety)

High Fat Foods – Party crackers
Low Fat Alternative – Low-fat crackers (choose lowest in sodium) Saltine or soda crackers (choose lowest in sodium)

High Fat Foods – Cake (pound, chocolate, yellow)
Low Fat Alternative – Cake (angel food, white, gingerbread)

High Fat Foods – Cookies
Low Fat Alternative – Reduced-fat or fat-free cookies (graham crackers, ginger snaps, fig bars) (choose lowest calorie variety)

Snacks and Sweets

High Fat Foods – Nuts
Low Fat Alternative – Popcorn (air-popped or light microwave), fruits, vegetables

High Fat Foods – Ice cream, e.g., cones or bars
Low Fat Alternative – Frozen yogurt, frozen fruit or chocolate pudding bars

High Fat Foods – Custards or puddings (made with whole milk)
Low Fat Alternative – Puddings (made with skim milk)

Fats, Oils and Salad Dressings

High Fat Foods – Regular margarine or butter
Low Fat Alternative – Light spread margarines, diet margarine, or whipped butter, tub or squeeze bottle

High Fat Foods – Regular mayonnaise
Low Fat Alternative – Light or diet mayonnaise or mustard

High Fat Foods – Butter or margarine on toast or bread
Low Fat Alternative – Reduced-calorie or fat-free salad dressings, lemon juice, or plain, herb flavored, or wine vinegar

High Fat Foods – Butter or margarine on toast or bread
Low Fat Alternative – Jelly, jam, or honey on bread or toast

High Fat Foods – Oils, shortening, or lard
Low Fat Alternative – Nonstick cooking spray for stir-frying or sautéing As a substitute for oil or butter, use applesauce or prune puree in baked goods

Miscellaneous

High Fat Foods – Canned cream soups
Low Fat Alternative – Canned broth-based soups

High Fat Foods – Canned beans and franks
Low Fat Alternative – Canned baked beans in tomato sauce

High Fat Foods – Gravy (homemade with fat and/or milk)
Low Fat Alternative – Gravy mixes made with water or homemade with the fat skimmed off and fat-free milk

High Fat Foods – Fudge sauce
Low Fat Alternative – Chocolate syrup

High Fat Foods – Avocado on sandwiches
Low Fat Alternative – Cucumber slices or lettuce leaves

High Fat Foods – Guacamole dip or refried beans with lard
