A collaborative study with the University of Pennsylvania, VA Center of Canandaigua and the Unversity of Rochester suggests drinking this tangy red juice may be the answer to getting a more restful night’s sleep. So the positive effects of this drink on sleep have been studied and the results have been published.
During the study, they researchers gave 15 older adults 8 ounces of tart cherry juice twice a day and studied the results. For a two week period, the participants drank a glass in the morning and in the evening. After the initial two week period was completed, they switched over to drinking a placebo drink. After the entire study ran its course, the researchers then reviewed the results.
According to the results of the first two weeks, there was a significant difference in the quality of sleep when compared to the results of the second two weeks of the study. During the weeks of cherry juice consumption, the adults slept on average 17 minutes more per night, on average, when compared to the nights drinking the placebo.
While the juice contains a number of naturally occurring antioxidants, the most important one relating to sleep function is melatonin. As mentioned above, melatonin is vital to helping the body’s natural clock. In addition, to the study mentioned above, Dr. Russell Reiter from the University of Texas, San Antonio has also researched the melatonin in this tiny red tree fruit.
Dr. Reiter is a biomedical scientist and is one of the world’s leading authorities on melatonin and is often referred to as the “Dean of Melatonin”. Here is what Dr. Reiter said about tart cherries and melatonin, "When consumed regularly, tart cherries may help regulate the body's natural sleep cycle and increase sleep efficiency, including decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep," says Reiter. "And, because cherries are so rich in other antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, you get other important health benefits."
