After a nail-biting, chilly spring it appears the Northwestern tart cherry crop and U-pick cherries are in for a robust harvest. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture report issued on the recent Thursday indicating preliminary numbers are pointing to the a 56 percent increase in the harvest over the 2010 year. This translates into approximately 210 million pounds of this tasty and health packed tiny red fruit. This not only means that the U-pick cherries will be excellent this year, but also it allows for excellent quantities of the fresh fruit to be produced into health-packed products including cherry juice, the capsules and the dried fruit.
