A study by Russell Reiter and fellow researchers from the Japanese-based University St. Marianna University of School of Medicine published that when the researchers fed chicks a diet containing plants rich in melatonin it chicks in the study enjoyed raised levels of melatonin. This means that melatonin ingested from a diet rich in plant-based enters general circulation, thus being able to be brought to sites on other tissue and in the brain (Hattori 1995). While their are several ways to get cherry-based melatonin into the body, many have turned to eating dried cherries or drinking cherry juice. The juice not only provides a refreshing drink but also is packed with naturally occurring melatonin
